HP Mini 5101

HP’s new Mini 5101 to tempt you with the same basic specs once again, but this time with a slick aluminum and magnesium chassis to appeal to the “mobile professional” or anyone else with a bit of class. In a crazy twist, HP has **finally moved the mouse buttons below the trackpad (because only professionals like clicking), and has included other perks like a 7200 RPM hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel webcam, and options of either a WSVGA (1024 x 600) or “HD” (1366 x 768) 10.1-inch LED screen.

There are also options for 80GB or 128GB SSD drives, four-cell or six-cell batteries, with the latter rated at an improbable eight hours of runtime, and of course WWAN. There’s a start price of $449, but with some of these options we could see that shooting up pretty fast — especially if you pick the optional USB-powered external disc drive, external speakers or port replicator.

The square chiclet keys are much easier to hunt down than Mini 1000-series flush keys, and the proper trackpad configuration is naturally a huge bonus. We’d much prefer multitouch scrolling to the side-scrolling action, of course, but at least it’s an improvement.

The overall build quality is near the top of any laptop or netbook we’ve played with in this price range — it’s not perfect, and there’s some of that telltale keyboard flex, but it’s a big improvement over its largely plastic competitors and predecessor.

Neo Laptop Shared Experience

From nice;

Hi. Sorry i was not able to read all of the comments above, yung nsa unang part lang, ang haba na kasi, kaya I don’t know kung nadiscuss na ‘tong itatanong ko.

I bought a Neo b2160 for 19,999 on May last year, and I haven’t experienced any serious problem until now, except on one instance when it had the Surabaya virus, which was fixed din agad by reformatting. Siguro one of the reasons was that I use it mostly for storage of files and Windows applications lang.

But recently, my friend installed a WarCraft game on the laptop and I’ve been quite hooked on the game (not online, if this is important). I noticed na madali nga siyang uminit, and sometimes bumabagal while I’m playing, tumitigil ng konti, pero so far there’s no other trouble yet. Do you think the game would cause any problem on the laptop in the long run? Do you know the limitations of this laptop? Ano yung mga hindi pwedeng applications?

Thanks so much! Will appreciate any help and pointer.

As what I’ve red, you have no problem about playing warcraft 3 on your laptop. It is normal to experience heating of your laptop for the game is kinda adictive, and to the part of the game begins to slow up because of the heating of your laptop too. It is processing to much game data while playing long hours.  All laptops have limitations ma’am, it is the consumers who find out how long would a laptop last unless we take care of our laptops. I suggest ma’am when playing  for long hours place yourself in a cool place so it won’t heat easily or limit your gaming hours so it won’t heat up that much. As for other appications I have no idea about applications that are not suitable for a laptops performance, but please ask again for our other readers might help you out in your other questions. Thanks for the shared experience.

Sharing One’s Laptop Experience

From JMB;

I bought an Empriva M72S about almost 2 years ago. Pretty much do everything with it. Using a Windows Vista OS on it. Had a few problems with the battery, like it wouldn’t turn on if it wasn’t plugged in.

Then just yesterday, I had it reformatted. Everything went well but then, I can’t even use my laptop if its not plugged in! Every time I try to unplug it, it turns off. It doesn’t wanna work with the battery life it still has, even though its fully charged!

ANY ADVICE PLEASE! ITS LIKE I HAVE A DESKTOP, IT TOTALLY DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF BEING A LAPTOP!

Have you tried bringing it in to be fixed? I can only think 2 possible problems on your laptop. 1st; your laptops battery is broken, 2nd the plug connecting your battery to your laptop has a defect. You have to let it be checked to see what is the real problem. If you see that the cost is much more expensive then buy a new laptop for it is much better. Thanks for sharing your laptop experience so many of our laptop users will know the hardships of owning a laptop. Write to us again on what have you done on this laptop of yours so we could share it yet again to our friends.

Shared Laptop Experience

From jha;

I bought a second hand neo laptop last december… The owner of this bought the laptop by may 2006. Until now it really works well but the only problem is the battery also..it heats so fast…I bought this for only 8K..but the RAM memory is only 256 that why the price is so cheaper..You need to be careful also with your laptop…The screen of my laptop still have plastic..hehe..

From Ruben;

I bought my neo empriva 572SVBx in Dec 2007. Last March, 2009, its LCD monitor had malfunctioned. I thought this brand and model is quiet good in quality. According to the supplier here in Zamboanga City, Philippines, the sparepart (inverter) is not available and if there is one its expensive!!!. Attention::: Neo manufacturers…

Thanks again for the people who share their experiences with us, as you can see jha have only bought a second hand laptop and the laptop is about 3 years old. There are some problems like battery life and the heating of the laptop and of course the specs but it still runs fine and the jha is still handling the unit with care. As of Ruben he just bought it last 2007 and the model now had problems with its monitor, which the part is expensive. I suggest you buy a new laptop if the price is far more expensive but another brand if you must to see the quality of other brands of laptops. And to add up, Neo manufacturers here in the philippines must have the parts when they need it to fix the laptops that have malfunctioned parts.

Shared Laptop Experience

From dcping;

I bought my neo vivid just more than a month ago..first problem i had was the adapter..had to send it to NEO service center in manila..after a week and a half.it was returned already with my new adapter…however..right now the problem is the laptop is giving out weird sounds like crackling sounds from the speakers..longer time to boot…and this blue screen for the first time popped out of nowhere…saying there’s a system error or sumthin…NOW WHAT? I’m in denial right now..we’re talkin bout hard earned money…i’m very very disappointed.

From Ann Ortiz;

im a neo user since january.. the prob is the VIA driver… can even play the game secondlife which im using for business purpose as well… after buying the laptop last january 2009, the laptop got lots of problems and i can even count it on my fingers… please just help me with the driver.. its all i want please..

These people here have shared and are in need of our help in their laptop experience. For miss ann’s problem, isn’t it suppose to be when you buy brand new laptops they have drivers of your laptop? or you could find a software downloader but I think some of them are “pay to download”. Let us help each other here, let us help miss ann in her problem. As of dcping try to let the warranty of the purchased laptop fix your problem and let us see what happens to your laptop. Thanks for sharing these experiences for our readers to know.

Experience and Advice

From Dennis dR;

I’ve had my Neo laptop for 3 years. It’s an Empriva 540NX2 w/ an Intel Core 2 1.66 procie, 1Gb Ram and and 80Gb hard drive. It still performs exceptionally well under constant abusive use. I recently got a broadband connection and I’m using it as a 24/7 torrent machine. It’s been on for about two weeks and its really held up well to the torture considering I don’t have an aircon in my stuffy room. Current config is almost the same with the original specs but I upgraded the hard drive to 250Gb and the OS to WIndows Vista Ultimate. Except for the noisy exhaust fan and poor battery life (a given since it’s 3 y/o already) I’ve no other complaints with my unit.

My advise to new laptop buyers is pick a laptop that more than meets your needs. Don’t settle for something adequate for now but lacking for future use. Also, if you don’t know your way around trouble-shooting simple pc problems it’s best you stick with the name brand laptops as they will have the after market support you need.

Neo is a bang for the buck brand. If you love specs but don’t want to spend a lot I recommend you give it a try but be forewarned that their tech-support/service is deemed questionable by more than a few here.

Thanks for sharing some of your laptop experience and giving advice for all our laptop buyers. I hope with this shared experience and advice from Dennis we get our money’s worth when choosing a laptop for our needs… thanks again!

Laptop Experiences

Here are more people that would like to share some laptop experiences.

From genes;

hello guys..ahmm I have my neo laptop right now and its still working heheh…but then I agree with the statements of the other neo users kasi yung friend ko bumili ng neo laptop and then after 3 months he can’t turn it on..so he brought it to the seller and the seller brought it to the tech. support…and guess what??? He wait for 3 months bago naibalik yung laptop nya..know what? pinagsisihan ko talaga ba’t ako bumili ng neo…hahay…next time DONT BUY NEO LAPTOPS.

From sirrey_70;

As of now my clevo m540 sr also known as neo basic 2160 wich cost me around 20k way back in 2007 fortunately is still alive and kicking.Cpu is Intel Celeron 1 gig ram (upgraded) Hdd 60 gig,Im running this machine everyday for more than 18 hours almost half of its life is used by my 7 year old son and a 5 year old daughter for their online games and sometimes for my emails and photo and music downloading.BTW i already posted 1 article here regarding this machine’s flickering lcd that i already self repaired.Originally OS of this product is linux change it to XP pro then Vista.Now i upgraded it with Windows 7 RC version build 7000 testing purposes only.If you have not tried Windows 7 I dare you to do so, It is more responsive than Vista and start up of it is really quick since installing it needs a clean install.Right now I am using a Huawei E 160 modem wireless broadband for my internet connection (my actual speed test result is 1.8 Mbps download much more faster than my Smart bro 999 then wich is .3 Mbps only)my Neo serves me as a host computer running almost 18 hours daily for me to have an access to the internet.My other computer is a 3 year old C500 Compaq with 2 gig of ram also running Windows 7 is the other one who connects to my Neo since I only have 2 laptops its just a waste of money to buy a router for a usb broadband wich cost a bit high as of now.For us to run our Computer smoothly install updates so we can take advantage of quick fix on it.Install OS from a reputable vendor.Also recomend to put Avg or any anti-virus program to your system and be cautious for those who are hooked on downloading in Limewire.There is nothing wrong choosing low cost brand of computers And there is nothing wrong also choosing a high end computers if you have the means to buy it.Practicality wise its better be smart to purchase something that will meet your needs not your wants since gadgets nowadays have no value tomorrow. thanks and God Bless.

Thanks for sharing more of your laptop experiences.

Sharing Laptop Experiences

From Chris;

hello guys.. i bought a neo laptop last week at octagon its neo 2235 its already a core 2 Duo 2ghz, 2gb ram,320gb hard disk.
the good-
it only cost me 30k compared to acer 4637 which cost 33k
watching movies, surfing the net and encoding is a breeze

the bad-
i get nervous when i open up discussions in the internet regarding the neo which is negative most of the time
it only takes 1.5 hours for the battery when watching movies
the handle near my keyboard gets so warm that its a big problem expecially when i’m encoding for long hours.

GUYS IF ANY OF YOU OUT THERE HAS SIMILAR LAPTOPS TO MINE PLEASE EMAIL ME SO WE CAN SHARE INFORMATION REGARDING THE PROPER CARE AND MAINTENACE FOR OUR NEO BASIC 2235 OR NEO BASIC 3185. MY EMAIL IS tiunayan@yahoo.com

From Regie;

I actually bought a NEO laptop (B 2148N)just last week. The thing is, I did not buy it for me, but for the department where I’m under. I was given a budget of 30k, and it was up to me to buy any brand with the best specs I can come up with.
I asked/consulted 2 friends, both used neo before, and they said that you’ll get your money’s worth with it.

I figured, the specs are good enough for me, it’s cheap, and the dealer where I bought it happens to be a very reputable service center of cellphones and incidentally an authorized one for neo too. So yeah I went ahead with my decision.

I asked the computer whiz in the place where I work the next day whether I should worry about it, and he told me that I should worry more if the laptop is handled carelessly, then problems will certainly crop up.
Still, finding this website/forum, I will keep everyone posted about the performance of the mentioned laptop, as well as the after sales service…(which I hope I wont need if it’s about repairs or anything related to it.

Thanks For Chris and Regie for sharing their laptop experiences with us, let us help each other by sharing our laptop experiences.

Sharing Experiences

From Martin

I have a Neo basic 2235 Black. Core 2 Duo 2ghz 2gb ram 320gb hard drive. Performance wise, it’s so-so. battery wise, it will only last 50 minutes when watching .rmvb/mp4 files with my headset. As for multitabbed firefox, around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Very short.

Just got it a few days ago.

From Bianca

I bought mine in June 2007. In May 2008 before the warranty expires, the LCD broke. They almost make me pay 14k for it but I insisted that they should replace it for free as it is still under warranty. Now, May 2009, they are telling me that the motherboard is already defective and I have to pay 11k to replace it. And for that price, it is not even brand new because as per the customer service, it will be more expensive.

I can already buy a new one with very good quality. Think twice if you will buy Neo laptops.

Thanks for sharing these experiences, It’s very good to share our experience with other to help them in choosing their own laptops. I hope more people share their experience to let others know that there are certain laptops that realy need to better the qualities of their products, so these will better their consumers.
